The Left Hand Phenomenon
Hello beautiful people, how’s it going? I hope you’re all doing great. Today, I’m discussing an issue that has always
bothered confused me. I’ve even written an article on it before, but that was ages ago, when I was sixteen or fifteen or something like that. It’s the issue of the left hand. You see, in Africa, the left hand has always been viewed as dishonorable, something to be looked down upon or as signifying disrespect. You’re not allowed to give things to your elders with your left hand, it means you are rude. When I was in secondary school, I had this teacher who used to punish my left handed friend for raising her left hand to answer a question or for writing an answer on the board with her left hand. My little brother is left handed and my heart still aches when I think of everything he went through even as a four year old because he held his spoon on his left or wrote in class with his left. My parents and I did our best to defend him, but we couldn’t always be around him. At the end of the day, he actually began to use his right hand but he would write words laterally inverted, often writing ”p” as if it were ”q”. That became another hurdle; trying to get him to write letters correctly with both hands. Well, the only thing that has come out of making him write with his right would be his ambidexterity. But I always wonder ; Is that worth all the emotional turmoil a young child has to go through, because he’s left handed?
Personally, I love the idea of being left handed, maybe because I’m a righty. But it always looks beautiful to me when left handed people write. I’m fascinated by it. Many famous people are left handed including the president of the United States himself. People who aren’t African may not understand or even know about this, but it can be highly damaging to try to change which hand a person writes with, especially forcefully. It’s a different situation when such ambidexterity results from an accident which limits use of the person’s original hand, but forcefully changing this means that you confuse the brain’s orientation, not necessarily letting it adapt to a situation as in the case of an accident. It also causes trauma to the child and she child is constantly afraid that you’ll scold him for doing something completely natural for him. This affects the delicate self esteem of little people who are still unable to speak up for themselves. Granted, they may have their parents sometimes, but they will go to school or visit relatives without their parents and they will have to be scolded again and again. It’s not going to make anyone commit suicide, but you do not have to put a child through that for a completely ridiculous reason with no basis whatsoever.
”In left handed people the right brain is dominant and research has proven that this brain dominance makes left-handers more likely than right handers to be creative and visual thinkers”
I did a little research and I found out a few reasons why left handedness is looked down upon;
”In the Northern hemisphere you have to face south to follow the sun and move from left to right until the suns sets in the west. This gave moving to the right and the right hand side a great significance. Another theory says that as the heart is on the left hand side, a shield would have to be in the left hand to defend it and any weapon therefore had to be held in the right, which became the dominant hand. Recent theories have included one that right-handedness is the normality and left-handedness is a deficiency which results from a traumatic birth! Left-handers have done quite badly over the years and many old superstitions still survive today”
Other Facts about Left handed People;
-Stuttering and dyslexia occur more often in left-handers (particularly if they are forced to change their writing hand as a child, like King of England George VI).
-Left-handers adjust more readily to seeing underwater.
-Left-handers excel particularly in tennis, baseball, swimming and fencing
-Left-handers usually reach puberty 4 to 5 months after right-handers
-4 of the 5 original designers of the Macintosh computer were left-handed
-Left handed surgeons need different kind of scissors due to their orientation.
-1 in 4 Apollo astronauts were left-handed – 250% more than the normal level.
-5 out of the 7 most recent American Presidents have been left handed.
– Other famous people like Marilyn Monroe, Jimi Hendrix and Leonardo Da Vinci were all left handed.
The left hand is used unfavorably in the bible and in Christianity in general for reasons best known to the author of the bible himself, but when a person is born left handed, there is absolutely nothing wrong with letting the person live and breathe fearlessly. There’s always left and right, you do not have two right hands or two right legs. You have left and right. If you think the left hand is so awful, you should cut if off and be without it. Left is not wrong. There’s right and wrong and there’s right and left. Don’t get it twisted. Left handed people are often very creative and talented people, so let them be. Right handed people are pretty awesome too (I mean I’m right handed ;)). Let’s love each other and be each other’s keeper. Variety is good. It’s the spice of life.
Enjoy the rest of your week! xx
**P.S I’m really interested in finding out the main reason why many people are offended by left handedness, so if you know anything about this, let me know in the comments 🙂
